Biogas and biomethane in Brazil, Indonesia and Colombia

IBKE has continued its consultancy activities in Brazil and started in other countries. In addition to detailed feasibility studies for pilot projects IBKE accompanied a delegation of Brazilian gas providers and regulation authority representatives on a study tour through Germany and Sweden. The excursion was organized and financed as a part of the GIZ project Probiogás.

As part of Probiogás, IBKE also conducted a three-day workshop for the state regulation authorities for energy and waste disposal (ARSESP) in São Paulo. Based on the workshop results ARSESP developed and published a draft of regulative framework for the biomethane market in São Paulo, which is currently in the phase of public discussion. More...

For another project, IBKE conducted a study on the technical possibilities of biomethane feed in a Brazilian state.

In Colombia, IBKE carried out a workshop on the basics of biogas production for about 40 participants on behalf of the Cámara de Comercio de Cali in November 2016. The biogas market in Colombia is in the process of being established and Cámara de Comercio de Cali is interested in furthering the development. Frank Scholwin and Johan Grope were impressed by the ambitions and practical activities of the stakeholders for tapping the biogas production potential from agricultural, industrial and municipal residues and waste products. In addition there is federal support for the import of environmental technology, which eases market entry for foreign companies. You can write to us for more information. If you would like to find out more on-site, Cámara de Comercio de Cali is organizing the conference "BI-ON 2017 First Bioenergy Congress in Colombia", which will take place on April 27th – 28th, 2017. More information (in Spanish) can be found on the conference website.

Last but not least, IBKE carried out a biogas workshop for an Indonesian delegation at Fraunhofer IFF in Magdeburg on behalf of the Fraunhofer Society in November 2016.

Biogas Research Centre with excellent output in Linköping, Sweden

As one of the four member of the international reference group of the Swedish Biogas Research Centre I saw in the last meeting a great development of this centre focussing on societal aspects and the role of biogas related solutions in large frame of our live – just looking on the “large picture” but also looking into technical-biological aspects of anaerobic processes. As center concentrating extreme broad science together with a steadily increasing large number of Swedish industrial and public stakeholders an extreme valuable place of biogas research and development is situated in Linköping, Sweden now!

I can only suggest to check their activities here:

IBBA Workshop 2015 on “Pretreatment of lignocellulosic substrates for biogas production” full success / presentations for download available

IBBA Workshop 2015 on “Pretreatment of lignocellulosic substrates for biogas production” at September 10th in Malmö Sweden full success

With 55 participants the annual workshop organised by the “Inter Baltic Biogas Arena” more than fulfilled the expectations of the organisers Energiforsk, Institute for Biogas, Waste Management and Energy and DBFZ.

Excellent presentations were given on the latest scientific knowledge on pretreatment methods and its evaluation for lignocellulosic biomass designated for biogas production. This was mixed with company presentations and a speeddating event that the best possible matchmaking between participants from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Austria, The Netherlands, Finland and Norway was possible.

All presentations and abstracts are available for download at the event homepage for further use.

Thanks for support by IEA Bioenergy Task 37, our sponsor Landia and the exhibitors Tekniska Verken, Bioprocess Control and YARA.

About IBBA:

The Inter Baltic Biogas Arena is the information exchange service for increased cooperation of biogas protagonists in the Baltic Region. This is an initiative open for everybody from the biogas scene without membership, administration, fees! If you are interested in news on baltic biogas information, projects, contacts, partner requests or if you will tell our community something of interest about your projects without advertisements please join us!

Every year IBBA arranges a workshop within a specific topic in the biogas field. The purpose of the workshop is to create networking between researchers and companies within the same field in the baltic region. Last years topics were digestate treatment  and methane emissions from biogas installations.  For 2015 we decided to focus on straw and other lignocellulosic substrates - these constitute a large part of the European biogas potential. These substrates are difficult to digest without a suitable pretreatment method that increase the methane yield and decrease the required retention time in the digester. Next year we go to Denmark with the workshop!

European Biogas Association kicks off gasification activities

European Biogas Association (EBA) sets common targets of the anaerobic digestion and gasification industry towards the EU policy in a united Mission and Vision document.

“Thermal gasification is a complementary technology to anaerobic digestion (AD) and it greatly amplifies the potential of renewable energy in the form of heat, electricity and vehicle fuel” is the lead message of the new Mission and Vision of the European Biogas Association. The document, published and launched during 2nd REGATEC conference on May 7th 2015 in Barcelona, identifies the policies and conditions to be fulfilled to fully deploy the AD and gasification potential. “It is crucial that we establish a European market for common AD and gasification products: biomethane, ashes and digestate, and that we facilitate cross- border trading of these three valuable goods” told Dr. Jan Stambasky, EBA’s president.

With the new Mission and Vision EBA kicks off activities dedicated to promotion and increase of the visibility of biomass gasification. “If we want gasification to grow in the future, we need to combine our efforts and to start being heard in Brussels.” summarized Dr. Jörgen Held co-organizer of the REGATEC, together with Prof. Frank Scholwin.

The complete EBA’s Mission and Vision is available on EBA website: www.european-gasification.eu

The Institute for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy in Brazil: Know-How transfer and consulting

In the second half of 2014 the Institute for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy was able to expand its consulting activities in Brazil by conducting a training course for the preparation of feasibility studies for the biological treatment of municipal organic waste together with IGLux and ECOTERRA-BIO in São Paulo. This course took place within the GIZ program "Probiogás". In addition, the Institute for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy on behalf of GIZ continues to advise the national regulatory authority for Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) with regard to the injection of biomethane into the public gas distribution system and its energetic use. Besides other indicators, the plan of the ANP shows a clear rise in interest in the production and utilization of biogas in Brazil. Increasingly, the Institute for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy also obtained requests for advisory services from the Brazilian private sector. An example of this is a landfill and landfill gas upgrading plant operator, which had contracted the Institute for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy with consultancy regarding the handling of siloxanes in landfill gas. The Institute for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy follows the development in Brazil actively by its consulting activities and a growing network in Brazil.

German Renewable Energy Act amended – massive impact on power generation from biogas

The recently amended German Renewable Energy Act will entail significant cuts for the biogas sector. Modest growth is to be expected only for biogas plants based on residual products and wastes; it is likely that energy crops will be no longer play a role in new plants. Economic constraints will also be placed on the upgrading of existing biogas plants. A summary of the new provisions and the transitional provisions for existing plants is presented, among other features, in the German special newsletter issued by the von Bredow Valentin law firm.

Switch from natural gas CHP to biomethane operation – possible by the end of 2014! Secure heat prices for the long term!

CHP plants which produce electricity from biomethane by December 31, 2014 and use only biomethane from existing producers will receive the high fees from the beginning of 2014 guaranteed for 20 years as from the initial commissioning of the plant (using natural gas for example). In recognition of the long planning and implementation periods for biomethane plants, the transitional provisions for biomethane were extended further shortly before the amendment was passed. The potential for natural gas fuelled CHP plants to safeguard long-term returns and assure consistently low heat prices by this switch-over remains very high. We will be glad to advise you, provide you with short-term assistance in converting, and establish contacts with biomethane suppliers.

International trading, use as motor fuel and separate eco-assessment is opening up new prospects for biomethane

The versatility of biomethane is increasingly opening up new prospects for biogas generation and use alongside the traditional German model based on use of gas from energy crops in CHP plants. New options for international marketing of biomethane are arising thanks to rising demand and the elimination of administrative hurdles. The change in the biofuel quota from energy procurement to reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will offer new possibilities for the marketing of biomethane in the heat market and as motor fuel from 2015 onwards. In conjunction with the eco-assessment split now allowed by the amended Renewable Energy Act in Germany, this also enables existing plants especially to devise new concepts for substrate use and biomethane marketing in the various segments. We will be glad to advise you, and assist you in developing new concepts from production through to the marketing of your biomethane.

Institute of Biogas, Life-Cycle Management & Energy hosted workshop on regulation of biogas supply to natural gas grids in Brazil

At a two-day workshop attended by Brazilian decision-makers, including from the national petroleum, natural gas and biofuels agency ANP, Frank Scholwin and Johan Grope, assisted by GIZ national consultant Heinz-Peter Schnicke, set forth the possibilities for regulation of biogas supply to natural gas grids, examining the existing international experience base and the possibilities available under the prevailing conditions in Brazil. The workshop, held in mid-June in Rio de Janeiro, was organised by the GIZ as part of the long-term Probiogás project. The Institute of Biogas, Life-Cycle Management & Energy attracted a great deal of interest among the attendees. Johan Grope comments: "It was very enjoyable discussing the various issues surrounding biogas supply with such highly motivated and interested participants. It is particularly pleasing for me to now see how rapidly the subject of biogas production and use is growing in Brazil, after having written my degree master thesis on the possibilities for optimising biogas plants in Brazil under the auspices of the GIZ five years ago while spending a year in the country." In order to maintain its involvement in these very exciting developments, the Institute has already succeeded in acquiring some more consultancy contracts in Brazil, among them training on biological organic waste treatment feasibility studies for GIZ in autumn.

Energy Markets Forecast indicates long-term development goals for renewables and CHP will not be met – yet 27 % of all electricity already being generated from renewables today!

The recently published German Energy Markets Forecast, drawn up by Prognos, EWI and gws on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, clearly shows that the German Federal Government's goals for the development of combined heat and power generation and the expansion of renewable energy use cannot be met. The optimistic trend scenario is rated as unrealistic without major changes to the regulatory framework. Yet policy-makers are unlikely to implement the changes needed. Nevertheless, renewables did generate a record 27% of total electricity consumption in Germany in the first half of 2014. The previous year's comparative figure was 23%.

Thanks for your support! 650 € for Tasifan!

I did choose the electronic way for my Christmas- and New-Year greetings to save costs, paper and transport for the environment. I decided to use the saved money to help a very engaged social project located in Weimar – the youth circus TASIFAN. This project is “Meeting point, education, café, a shoulder to cry on and training” for kids and teens in Weimar. Additionally this project creates international contacts with circus artists and enthusiasts. Thanks to your positive responses on my Christmas greetings I supported Tasifan with 1€ per response, a bit rounded up.

Record: More electricity from Renewables than from convetional power plants

Münster – Electricty from Renewables reaches a new peak value i4n Germany. Wind- and solarenergy plants did produce for the first time with a load of 36.000 Megawatt (MW) electricty. this is published by the Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien (IWR).

The amount of energy corresponds to a load of more than 30 nuclear power plants. Occasionally the renewable energy plants feeded more electricity into the german grid than the conventional power plants. A milestone in the energy system transition!

New Thesis on Biogas Framework in Sweden

New Thesis on Biogas Framework in Sweden

JuMikael Lantz had his defence of his thesis on “Biogas in Sweden – Opportunities and challenges from a systems perspective”. Prof. Frank Scholwin had the honour to be his opponent during the defence and after reading the book carefully I only can suggest you to read it. It contains many information on the actual framework, costs, revenues and environmental questions of biogas utilization in Sweden. So it can be seen as a holistic review of the Swedish biogas situation.

The summary is available here.

European Biogas Association (EBA) is growing and thriving

”Today EBA represents 30 national biogas associations from 22 countries and 28 of the most important companies working internationally in the field of biogas. EBA covers therewith over 98% of all biogas plants in Europe”

The proud message of the abundant coverage of biogas production in Europe was announced by EBA’s president Arthur Wellinger at the fourth General Assembly of the European Biogas Association.

The meeting took place alongside the annual conference and exhibition of the German Biogas Association (Fachverband Biogas) on 29 January in Leipzig, Germany. In addition to the positive news about EBA’s steady growth, the election of the EBA Board belonged to the highlights of the meeting. As a result of the vote, EBA President Arthur Wellinger  remains in his position. Two new Executives were elected to the Board: Göran Strandberg from the Swedish Gas Association and Stefano Bozzetto from the Italian Biogas Association. They replace Caroline Marchais, director of ATEE Club Biogaz, France, and Piero Gattoni, president of the Italian Biogas Association. The remainder of the totally 7 board members were re-elected.

The year 2013 will bring along legislative challenges for the biogas sector both at EU and national levels: the EU is constricting its sustainability criteria for biofuels and eventually for solid and gaseous biomass. The expected end-of-waste status, i.e. product status, for digestate might bring new substantial administrative burdens for operators in case digestate falls under REACH. On national levels, the deployment of biogas plants is stagnating in a few key biogas countries, such as Germany and Czech Republic, due to the reformed support schemes being disadvantageous to the biogas sector. On the other hand, new positive feed-in tariffs have been lately introduced in Austria and the United Kingdom. Also Poland is expecting changes in the support scheme, which might un-tap the huge biogas potential in the country.

EBA is convinced that biogas will have a significant role to play in the European decarbonised energy future and will surely continue advocating strongly the interests of the European biogas industry at the EU level and offering support to its members at national levels.

Frank Scholwin did present the state of the technology of organic waste digestion at the biogas day Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart for about 250 participants.

For much more participants then expected Prof. Kranert from Stuttgart University did organize the biogas day Baden-Württemberg under the headline “Biogas from waste – a substantial module for waste management and energy system transition”. Minister Franz Untersteller claimed an intensified separate collection of organic municipal and industrial wastes and an increased anaerobic treatment of this material. On this background about the speakers did exchange very optimistic views on technical, legal and economic aspects of organic waste digestion with about 250 participants.

The presentation of Prof. Scholwin on the state of the technology of organic waste digestion (in German) is available here.
